The New Google Algorithm Update 2023

The new google algorithm update is coming out next month that will directly affect everyone’s SEO.
This is not your typical update where they care about your domain authority or your page authority. None of that google strictly focuses on the page experience and the user experience users have on your WordPress website.

The New Google Algorithm Update:

It is coming out in May 2021, which is a month from now, so you do want to make sure that you comply with a lot of these signals.

Largest Contentful Paint:

What this means is a large object, a huge piece of text. If you have something on your website that’s taking your website a long time to load, fix it, optimize it or get rid of it.

The largest contentful paint metrics render the time of the largest image or text block, so anything big on your website has to go it has to go so if you downloaded an image from “Unsplash.” You did not optimize it. That would probably be a factor, which would probably be something you might want to optimize.
A good score a good LCP score is around 2.5 seconds or less, so what elements are considered obviously? It’s going to be some sort of image, maybe a video, something huge on your website.

So you do want to make sure that the largest element on your website does not load more than 2.5 seconds so keep that in mind.

First input delay:

This is very interesting, so this is solely going to measure the inactivity of users. I think what’s happening here is they want to see if users are actually going to your website and engaging, so are they going to the button are they clicking on something and I think that Google actually did this because of what happened on the last update is users had bots on their websites and that caused them to have a low bounce rate.

So google believed that you know. I think they’re doing this now to say, okay, are people actively going to the website and engaging in it? Are they doing stuff on it, and that’s what Google wants to see, so they’re looking for a tap a click or something that causes the browser to say, okay, let’s start the process. They don’t want them to sit there, and you know and fall asleep they want to make sure that your website is inviting or it’s engaging, or it’s inviting them to do something, so keep that in mind.

A good way to make them engage is again having a call to action on your website just having a call to action having somewhere where they can easily click on something and go, and you know something like that would be ideal for this signal.

Cumulative Layout Shift:

Which measures visual stability now. In short, this has to do with preventing anything annoying or unexpected movement of the page content. In fact, the website I need to adjust it for this specific update.

So this can be anything like animations that pop out. It can be a video player that starts playing right away when you visit the websites. It can be a pop-up that blocks your whole screen. Also, it can be any one of those now. It’s actually kind of hard to point your finger on you know what exactly it is. But Google does also give us a perfect example.

https://storage.googleapis.com/web-dev-assets/layout-instability-api/layout-instability2.webm

They’re trying to go back, and then whoops, it’s like you just lost your money. Now you have to process a refund, so they’re just looking for, I guess you want to say annoying experiences or shifts, so right here we have what is CLS measures the total of the individual layout shift scores for every unexpected layout shift that occurs during the lifespan of each page.

A layout shift occurs whenever a visible element changes its position from one rendered frame to the next.
They give us a good analysis of it so multiple unstable elements, so again, it’s just something that unexpectedly shifts. Hence, a layout shift is only bad if the user is not expecting it, so if something just kind of moves around when they click on it or click on a box. It causes something that’s just an example of a bad experience, so you do want to optimize your website for that. Now I’m not necessarily sure if CSS or javascript violates that.

I’m not really sure if this is reducing my CLS score. Still, for my website benefits, I’m just going to take it off.
You know, if you’re going to ask me, do javascript and CSS on my home page affect my SEO score for these updates? I don’t know! You know I really wish I had a better answer for you, but I will update.

Try to reduce anything annoying and respect the new Google algorithm update try to make your websites just more accessible. They do have some tools on how you can monitor it now.

Mobile-Friendly Websites:

And this is no surprise, but I guess you want to say they’re increasing their percentage of your overall SEO score based on mobile-friendly websites.
You can actually use their mobile-friendly test, so enter in your website, and if it passes cool, it passes.

SSL Certificate:

The New Google Algorithm Update cares a lot about Safe browsing, so they want to make sure that your website doesn’t have SSL on it. You don’t have any malware. You know that’s pretty much it. Also, right here, it says deceptive using for social engineering content. So I guess they’re looking for is your website a scam you know pretty much it so just be very transparent about what your website is about don’t leave any surprises, don’t leave anything that the user is just going to say oh man this is a scam. So anything deceptive, anything weird.

HTTPS:

HTTPS is all right, so make sure you have your HTTPS. And if you don’t have it on google, it will say that your website is dangerous. They still want to proceed, so you can avoid all of that by just having an SSL on your website.

So that is pretty much it for the new Google algorithm update. Now, remember it is coming out May 2021, which is next month.

Really Simple SSL Plugin For WordPress

In the realm of WordPress development, There are usually several options available to accomplish a particular purpose. From blocks editor tools to forms builders, there’s a myriad of choices to pick from and often requires a keen sense of sight and years of WordPress expertise to determine which one is best for your specific application. We strongly believe that security and SEO veterans WordFence and Yoast SEO are the best choices for your particular needs without highly reviewed and solid rivals. But in terms of setting your security certificate on your website and making sure there aren’t conflicts with the plugin, Really Simple SSL is as close to being a simple choice.

What is Really Simple SSL Plugin?

The Really Simple SSL plugin is a simple click plugin that analyzes your configuration and sets up the WordPress website to work over HTTPS. It is required to possess the SSL security certificate on the server that hosts the website.

However, it handles all of the rest. If you try to set up the configuration on your own can be a hassle, and you could result in a faulty task, so the plugin takes care of all the finer details for you. We’ve found that it has worked almost flawlessly.

Why bother to get an SSL Certificate?

It wasn’t long ago that SSL certificates were only for eCommerce websites and also for those with three deadbolts hanging from their entrance doors. If you don’t own the SSL Certificate on the security of your WordPress website, you’re in danger of being a target for hackers (kind of like those who keep their purses or wallet in their vehicle in a dangerous neighborhood).

Apart from the obvious benefit of securing any information that is exchanged between the website and its visitors, Google and other search engines can penalize websites that do not have an active security certificate. If that’s not enough to convince you for installing an SSL Certificate, this is what the users will see once they arrive at your site:

How to Install & Activate The Plugin

The process of activating & installing the plugin couldn’t be more straightforward. It is essential to backup your website prior to the installation of any plugin, particularly one that requires significant changes to the configuration.

Once you make a backup of your database and your files, install the plugin on the website, then activate the plugin, and then select “go ahead, activate SSL.” It is essential to carefully examine your website after clearing your browser’s cache to make sure there aren’t any issues which we suggest you have an experienced team of web developers (like us).

Like many other things with WordPress is simple until a problem occurs. However, with Really Simple SSL, this isn’t a common occurrence, but it is vital to have your website thoroughly verified after enabling SSL.

Ifada - SEO & WordPress Services
What Is SSL Certificate And How I Can Get A Free One

You need an SSL Certificate on your WordPress website. Even if you aren’t taking card numbers or having login pages where people enter usernames and passwords, the Google search algorithm prioritizes sites with an SSL certificate.

Google feels so strongly about sites having SSL that now any sites that do not have them display a not secure warning in the Google Chrome browser. Where sites that offer SSL will display the lock icon. Google has been shifting the narrative of SSL.

Why do I need an SSL Certificate?

From something you use for extra security to being the new standard, your site is suppressed in the algorithm and labelled as not secure if you don’t have one. So yes, there’s no way to spin it. Your website needs an SSL certificate.

Now recently, when I did my GoDaddy web hosting review, I saw that they are charging 667 a month for an SSL certificate. Some people pay at least something for an SSL certificate because they know it’s a priority, and they figure it just costs money.

Well, in the past, it did. It wasn’t unreasonable to pay 10 plus dollars per year for an SSL certificate. But today, there is little reason to pay for SSL.

Hosts that provide a free SSL:

That’s mainly thanks to Let’s Encrypt, a nonprofit certificate authority providing free SSL certificates to everyone. Many web hosts I recommend already work directly with Let’s Encrypt to give you free SSL certificates for your website. Hosts like Namehero, WPengine, and DreamHost.

Offer direct integration with Let’s Encrypt, so you can click a button in your panel and get your free SSL certificate. Still, a lot of hosts don’t offer integration for this. For some hosts, it’s because they haven’t gotten around to adding it yet.

And for others, and this is the big reason, it’s because they would rather sell you an SSL certificate and make more money. And that’s just the sad truth of the hosting industry. But there’s actually a workaround to this problem. And that’s to use Cloudflare.

What is Cloudflare?

Cloudflare is a free content delivery network, security firewall, and external DNS system that I’ve talked about before on this channel. It’s totally free to use, and they actually offer several options to get SSL on your website for free, even for hosts that don’t support Let’s Encrypt.

Just by setting up CloudFlare with your website, you can use what’s called flexible SSL. This is where traffic is encrypted from the Cloudflare servers to your browser, sufficient for the browser and Google.

To recognize your site as secure and present the lock icon. This free protection method is easy to set up and is legitimate if you’re using SSL to display the lock and satisfy the Google algorithm. But if you are taking card numbers or having a member login area on your website.

I would recommend having a full SSL solution. This is where all the traffic from your web host through Cloudflare and the browser is fully encrypted. This is the type of full SSL you receive for free.
