The new google algorithm update is coming out next month that will directly affect everyone’s SEO.
This is not your typical update where they care about your domain authority or your page authority. None of that google strictly focuses on the page experience and the user experience users have on your WordPress website.

The New Google Algorithm Update:

It is coming out in May 2021, which is a month from now, so you do want to make sure that you comply with a lot of these signals.

Largest Contentful Paint:

What this means is a large object, a huge piece of text. If you have something on your website that’s taking your website a long time to load, fix it, optimize it or get rid of it.

The largest contentful paint metrics render the time of the largest image or text block, so anything big on your website has to go it has to go so if you downloaded an image from “Unsplash.” You did not optimize it. That would probably be a factor, which would probably be something you might want to optimize.
A good score a good LCP score is around 2.5 seconds or less, so what elements are considered obviously? It’s going to be some sort of image, maybe a video, something huge on your website.

So you do want to make sure that the largest element on your website does not load more than 2.5 seconds so keep that in mind.

First input delay:

This is very interesting, so this is solely going to measure the inactivity of users. I think what’s happening here is they want to see if users are actually going to your website and engaging, so are they going to the button are they clicking on something and I think that Google actually did this because of what happened on the last update is users had bots on their websites and that caused them to have a low bounce rate.

So google believed that you know. I think they’re doing this now to say, okay, are people actively going to the website and engaging in it? Are they doing stuff on it, and that’s what Google wants to see, so they’re looking for a tap a click or something that causes the browser to say, okay, let’s start the process. They don’t want them to sit there, and you know and fall asleep they want to make sure that your website is inviting or it’s engaging, or it’s inviting them to do something, so keep that in mind.

A good way to make them engage is again having a call to action on your website just having a call to action having somewhere where they can easily click on something and go, and you know something like that would be ideal for this signal.

Cumulative Layout Shift:

Which measures visual stability now. In short, this has to do with preventing anything annoying or unexpected movement of the page content. In fact, the website I need to adjust it for this specific update.

So this can be anything like animations that pop out. It can be a video player that starts playing right away when you visit the websites. It can be a pop-up that blocks your whole screen. Also, it can be any one of those now. It’s actually kind of hard to point your finger on you know what exactly it is. But Google does also give us a perfect example.

They’re trying to go back, and then whoops, it’s like you just lost your money. Now you have to process a refund, so they’re just looking for, I guess you want to say annoying experiences or shifts, so right here we have what is CLS measures the total of the individual layout shift scores for every unexpected layout shift that occurs during the lifespan of each page.

They give us a good analysis of it so multiple unstable elements, so again, it’s just something that unexpectedly shifts. Hence, a layout shift is only bad if the user is not expecting it, so if something just kind of moves around when they click on it or click on a box. It causes something that’s just an example of a bad experience, so you do want to optimize your website for that. Now I’m not necessarily sure if CSS or javascript violates that.

I’m not really sure if this is reducing my CLS score. Still, for my website benefits, I’m just going to take it off.
You know, if you’re going to ask me, do javascript and CSS on my home page affect my SEO score for these updates? I don’t know! You know I really wish I had a better answer for you, but I will update.

So I guess they’re looking for is your website a scam you know pretty much it so just be very transparent about what your website is about don’t leave any surprises, don’t leave anything that the user is just going to say oh man this is a scam. So anything deceptive, anything weird.

HTTPS:

HTTPS is all right, so make sure you have your HTTPS. And if you don’t have it on google, it will say that your website is dangerous. They still want to proceed, so you can avoid all of that by just having an SSL on your website.

“Noreferrer Noopener” HTML attributes can be added to outgoing hyperlinks. These tags can be used to improve your SEO efforts.

Let’s begin with some definitions.

What is rel= “noreferrer?”

The rel= “noreferrer” tag is an HTML attribute that can be added as a link tag (). This tag prevents the target website from passing the referrer information by removing the URL header.

This means that Google Analytics traffic from links with the rel= “noreferrer” attribute will be categorized as Direct Traffic and not Referral.

This is an example of how to understand it better:

Let’s suppose that you link from Website A to Website B using the “noreferrer” tag.

If website owner B looks at the ‘ACQUISITION” report in Google Analytics, traffic from Website A is visible under the section’ REFERRALS.

Traffic from links that do not have rel= “noreferrer” is referred to as referral traffic.

If you link from Website A and Website B using the “noreferrer” tag, all traffic from Website A and Website B will be displayed in Google Analytics as DIRECT traffic (and not as a referral).

The rel= “noreferrer,” which shows traffic from links, is called direct traffic.

When should you use rel=” noreferrer?”

If you don’t wish other websites to know you are linking, you can use the rel= “noreferrer” attribute to outgoing links. That’s the main reason that I can think about.

Noreferrer & WordPress

If you’re using WordPress, you’ll know that WordPress automatically adds rel= “noopener notreferrer” when adding external links to your content.

This is the easiest way to solve the problem, but users who click the external link will leave your site. This could increase bounce rates, decrease time on your site, and so forth.

However, mobile traffic makes up the majority of traffic to your site. Users will not be able to return to their previous window due to the new tab on mobile.

WordPress can be prevented from adding rel= “noreferrer” to external links, but these plugins only work when WordPress uses TinyMCE. The new editor is not (Gutenberg).

I recommend not messing with this. Just avoid opening external links within a new tab, and you will be fine.

Noreferrer and affiliate links

Noreferrer does not have an impact on affiliate links. This is because most affiliate programs don’t rely on referral traffic to award conversions but rather on the affiliate ID embedded in the link. Here’s an example:

You add rel= “nofollow” to an external URL to instruct search engines not to pass any PageRank between pages. You tell search engines to ignore the link for SEO purposes.

The difference between Nofollow Noreferrer means that noreferrer doesn’t pass any referral information on to the browser, but the link is still followed. Nofollow means that referral information is sent to the browser, but the link is not followed.

They are different things. If you don’t trust a link, use Nofollow and “noreferrer.”

What is rel= “noopener?”

The HTML attribute that you can be added to external links is rel= “noopener.” It blocks the opening page from gaining any access to the original page.

Here’s an example of a rel= “noopener” tag-linked link:

WordPress automatically adds this to external links that open in new tabs for security reasons. It is highly recommended that you keep it.

It is recommended that you add rel= “noopener” if you don’t have WordPress installed. This will allow external links to open in a new tab.

Rel=”noopener”, and SEO

Also Noopener has no impact on your SEO, so you can use it safely to increase the security of your site.

Key Learnings

Many people find dealing with HTML tags and attribute confusing. However, this shouldn’t be so with “noreferrer” or “noopener.”

They have no negative impact on your SEO. Use them all!

These tags will be added automatically if you’re on WordPress.
